One of the most beautiful villages in Italy

Ancient Perugia, the most well-known part of the city, is encircled by two walls: an outer medieval wall that stretches for several kilometers, still largely intact. Along this wall, you’ll come across several gates, like the Cassero di Porta Sant’Angelo.

Further in, there is the Etruscan wall (during the Etruscan era, the city had seven gates), characterized by the massive stones used in its construction.

However, not many monuments from the oldest part of the city have survived, as the rest of the urban core is mostly medieval.

The historic center is essentially a 14th-century village, one of the most beautiful in Italy.

Some Points of Interest:

Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria
Housed in the Palazzo dei Priori, it showcases. one of Italy’s most important art collections, including masterpieces by artists like Piero della Francesca, Perugino, and Pinturicchio

Cathedral of San Lorenzo:
Located in Piazza IV Novembre, this magnificent example of Gothic architecture includes the Chapel of San Bernardino with its frescoes by Federico Barocci.

Rocca Paolina: This underground fortress, built by Pope Paul III in 1540, offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s history. Wander through its tunnels and discover the remains of medieval houses embedded within the walls.

In the heart of the historic center

"Perhaps I shall do the reader a favor by telling him how he should spend a week in Perugia. His first care should be not to hurry, to walk everywhere very slowly and aimlessly, and to observe everything that meets his eyes." — Henry James, writer
